Recent wine reviews have gone so far as comparing Syrah as the bigger, bolder cousin to Pinot Noir.  There are reports of Wine Sommeliers labeling the Syrah section of their wine list as ‘Syrah, what “Big Pinot” wants to be.’  The upside, if you like big Pinots and like to save a few bucks, try rekindling your love of Syrah.  Our Featured Wine of the Week includes a 2-year vertical of cool-climate Syrah’s from the Sierra Foothills. We also have a Syrah/Cab Franc blend from the Sierra Foothills included in this promotion.  Get all 3 bottles for $25.  As an added bonus, get a case of wine for $100 and shipping is included in the sales price for CA, OR and NV.  50% off case shipping fees for all other states.  Go to the website to purchase.

Ziata Wines http://www.ziatawines.com/ is a new winery from the Cakebread family.  Started by Karen Cakebread, the inaugural release consists of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The Sauvignon Blanc has clone 1 (gives it the citrus flavor) clone 7 (a gooseberry flavor) and is from a single vineyard.  I know there is a 3rd clone but I don’t have it in my notes.  For those who prefer “Minimalists” wines, this one is for you.  This wine is sharp, focused and loaded with bright acidity.  The nose was citrus with a slight floral influence.  The taste included grapefruit, lemon and a slight floral taste with a creamy mouthfeel.  The finish was long and satisfying. Yum!

The Pinot Noir has clone 777  (provides strong and intense colors, strong aromas, good balance – round, tannic) clone 115 (provides a purplish hue, superior bouquet, elegant rich aroma) and is from a single vineyard. The nose was of rich dark fruits such as blackberries and raspberries along with a slight oak influence.  The taste included the berries along with some vanilla from the new french oak used by Karen.  It is really new and will benefit from some bottle aging.

These are some great wines and we would love to include them in our website.

The Santa Maria Valley is one of the crown jewels of California viticulture – producing some of the best cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir was sourced from 4 vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley AVA. Whole cluster fermentation was used with only a portion of the fruit, a fermentation of intact clusters as picked from the vine with no intervention of machines – all stems and berries are intact. This technique contributed to achieving a wine of greater complexity.  Indie Winemakers has a limited allocation of this wine available this week only.

About The Wine: From Cult Pinot Noir producer Roessler Cellars comes the second release of their Peregrine Pinot Noir. Named for the peregrines in the region, this wine does a great job of expressing the character of the appellation through fruit sourced from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard and Rancho Encantada – two terrific sites for Pinot Noir. Bright acidity lifts the rich fruit character of clones 667 and 777 from S&B, while the earthiness of the Pommard clone from Encantada brings further texture and depth. Blended from vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County, this wine expresses the tannic structure, herbed nuance, and beautiful fruit of the appellation with boldness and finesse.
