Ziata Wines http://www.ziatawines.com/ is a new winery from the Cakebread family.  Started by Karen Cakebread, the inaugural release consists of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The Sauvignon Blanc has clone 1 (gives it the citrus flavor) clone 7 (a gooseberry flavor) and is from a single vineyard.  I know there is a 3rd clone but I don’t have it in my notes.  For those who prefer “Minimalists” wines, this one is for you.  This wine is sharp, focused and loaded with bright acidity.  The nose was citrus with a slight floral influence.  The taste included grapefruit, lemon and a slight floral taste with a creamy mouthfeel.  The finish was long and satisfying. Yum!

The Pinot Noir has clone 777  (provides strong and intense colors, strong aromas, good balance – round, tannic) clone 115 (provides a purplish hue, superior bouquet, elegant rich aroma) and is from a single vineyard. The nose was of rich dark fruits such as blackberries and raspberries along with a slight oak influence.  The taste included the berries along with some vanilla from the new french oak used by Karen.  It is really new and will benefit from some bottle aging.

These are some great wines and we would love to include them in our website.

Am I the only one who’s noticed the wine guides and tasting notes do not match what’s being sold at BevMo? While browsing for wine in the store, I read the reviews, look at the point scores on the little markers above the wine to help me decide which wine to try. When I look at the label, I often find that the vintage does not match the helpful review’s vintage. Definition: A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single specified year.

Come on, we all know vintage switch happens in poorly run restaurants, but this should never happen in a retail wine store. Wine is not engineered from the same products year after year. Variables such as weather play a big part of determining the final product and ratings must be updated for each vintage. Come on BevMo, you gotta do mo than that! Any other thoughts…….

Tasting Notes – 2006 Napa Valley Charbono

Our tasting notes include sight, aromatics and palate. For more information, see our Tasting Techniques

  • Sight: This wine is dark ruby in color. Huge teardrops with no color variation.
  • Aromatics: Dark fruit aromas with blackberries, slightly mineral and a slight tobacco, and leather aroma.
  • Palate: Very smooth soft mouthfeel, big body and mostly balanced. A bit of tannins were noted in the finish suggesting another year will round out the wine. Will gain complexity and harmony in a few months.
