I’m sorry but – it’s time to start thinking about holiday gift giving.  Considering that you’re reading this, you are undoubtedly planning on giving wine to some of the people on your list. For those friends of yours who love Zinfandel, why not give them a wine you can’t find at your local grocery store, i.e., a slightly culty producer like Tofanelli?

This week, Indie Winemakers is offering hand-crafted artisan Zinfandel from Napa Valley produced by Tofanelli Family Vineyards. This is the same fruit used by Orin-Swift’s the ‘Prisoner’, which was ranked #17 of the top 100 wines in 2007 by Wine Spectator!  Deal Alert: No shipping fees and no tax outside of California means an additional savings of over $30 for most authorized ship-to states.  Only 5 states are restricted.  For additional information and to purchase, go here.

Accolades

  • 88-91 points Wine Spectator “Well-structured, with a dark fruit medley of ripe, zesty red cherry, currant, boysenberry and blackberry. Ends with a smooth, tapered finish and fine-grained tannins.”

Located in eastern Santa Barbara County in the Cuyama Valley, Alta Mesa Vineyard sits perched above Barnwood Vineyards at 3200 feet in elevation. Planted in 2000 to 8 X 5 spacing (1089 vines per acre), this vineyard is home to 9.5 acres of Grenache (Tablas clone A on 1103P & 101-14 rootstock). The soils consist of decomposed granite and clay loam with large rocks of schist, quartzite, basalt, and gneiss. There is a massive swing of daily temperatures that is very beneficial to the growing of these grapes, most often a 40 – 50 difference between day and night. Daytime high temperatures are lowered by the arrival of cooling breezes from the north at approximately 2:00 in the afternoon.

Our tasting Notes:
Ridiculously good wine! Very dark and extracted color in the glass. Red berry fruit nose. Tastes of cherry, vanilla, raspberry – just like trying fruit samples at the farmers market. Incredibly long finish with a little bit of tannins. Give this a few more months and then dig in.

Featured Wine Of The Week – 2004 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – York Mountain

10% off Retail and free shipping for Mailing List members. 20% off Case Price

$36/Btl – Order Here

About The Featured Wine

The 2004 Cabernet comes from the Acclaimed Carver Vineyard in York Mountain. This vineyard has been voted best cab in California at the 2005 state fair. With such a small production, this wine was not submitted for review. Only 100 Cases Produced.

York Mountain AVA (American Viticultural Area) vineyards are situated at an average of 1,500 feet and benefit from low-vigor soil, steep slopes, long sunshine hours and cool coastal breezes. A perfect growing climate for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Summary of Tasting Event

This 2004 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted on Oct 10, 2008 by a panel of 7 tasters in a blind tasting format. The winery suggests it be paired with Beef. Blue Cheese Crusted Beef Tenderloin is our suggested pairing for this wine. The recipie can be found on the website.

The tasting group’s most consistent remark was how this wine smoothed out with air time. We recommend opening this wine 1 hour before tasting. This full-bodied bottling has a beautiful, aromatic nose, an acid backbone, and a lush, velvety mouth-feel.

We noted classic Cabernet Sauvignon characteristics with concentrated flavors of black fruits and black pepper. There are subtle oak influences on this wine.

    About The Featured Wine

The 2005 Syrah was produced from Kiler Canyon Vineyard, a small single vineyard located on the Westside of Paso Robles. The vineyard is dedicated to Rhone varietals and is planted to specific clones of Syrah and Viognier.

    Summary of Tasting Event

This 2005 Syrah was tasted on Oct 10, 2008 by a panel of 7 tasters in a blind tasting format. The winery suggests it be paired with BBQ meat or spicy meat. Carne Guisada con Papas (meat & potatoes) is our suggested pairing for this wine. The recipie is on the website.

This was the groups’ favorite wine of the evening. We were all impressed with the full-bodied nature of the wine. More importantly, the bigness did not impact the smoothness of this wine. Look out Hermitage, this has the makings of another “Bottle Shock” story.

We noted classic Syrah characteristics with concentrated flavors of black fruits, raspberry and black pepper. There are subtle oak influences on this wine. A long finish.

Excellent Cab. Delicious fruit, blackberry, currants, nice balance, smooth, low on the tannins and acid but very enjoyable for the next several years.
